Outcome and Evidence
Making College Access a VReality
A goggle prototype was created so students may experience a virtual reality tour of universities. This idea was spurred by the survey given to our entire high school, in which students want to visit colleges but unable to attend due to lack of transportation or funding. It is our hope that this will spark aspirations for higher learning. STEAM Fair In conjunction with Earth Day month, the team will host and invite other organizations (Magic Club, Garden Club, and Robotics Team) to a celebratory event about STEAM. Scheduled free activities include DIY crafts, potting plants, e-waste recycling, magic art (origami) and circuitry. Intro to Coding 101 The team hosted coding sessions for 14 ninth graders, to introduce and spark interest in programming. Their final task was to create a game using Scratch program. Eastside Art Festival Over 1,000 people visited the East Side Art Festival where our team offered free interactive booths such as LED light craft, a tech playground, photo booth, E-waste recycling, and DIY water marble flowerpot. |
Circuits & College presentation
We conducted circuitry lesson to 34 middle school students in February to theme of Valentine's Day. In addition, we shared to over 459 middle school students the importance of higher education #TheExtraDegree 212 Pledge Campaign 233 participants pledged, exceeded our goal of 212, to be the extra degree that makes a difference. They pledged to make a positive change in their community and a better version of themselves. E-textile & Wearable Technology The team attended an introductory workshop to learn about circuitry and coding on textile (wearable tech). Guest Presenters for USC Start-Up Day The team is scheduled to speak to high school and college students at an upcoming Start-Up Day in May at USC. Hosted by the Engineering and Computer Science department, the team will share their challenge and participate in creating apps to address social issues. Designated October as Girls Empowerment Month In September, we spoke at the LAUSD Board Meeting to resolve October as Girls Empowerment Month. It was an amazing experience to share our stories on behalf of GBLA, and to see the immeasurable support for female students to pursue under-represented industries. We witnessed the voting and passage of the resolution, as celebration of possibilities for all. |
Our long term goal is to maximize exposure of college and STEAM careers with tangible resources. We challenge the people to be innovators towards a better community. Our next step is to hone our VR goggle prototype that showcases virtual tours of universities nationwide. We will continue our cause so our community, especially the students, are active learners and engage in STEAM activities to increase their passion towards math and science career pathways.
